Thailand's AIS has entered the fiber broadband market, launching a residential service using its new AIS Fibre brand.

The operator is offering plans ranging from a 590 baht ($18) per month 15Mbps service for apartment blocks to a high-end 1Gbps package for 27,990 baht, the Bangkok Postreported.

All packages come bundled with around 100 channels of home entertainment programming via the AIS Playbox service, a set top box designed to convert conventional TVs into smart TVs.

AIS currently operates around 120,000km of fiber, reaching 130,000 homes in seven provinces including Bangkok.

The company has ambitious expansion plans, setting a target of covering more than 10 million households by 2020. In terms of customers, AIS aims to sign up 100,000 fiber broadband customers this year and 1 million within five years.

AIS has set these targets despite the company's COO acknowledging that the Thai fixed broadband market is considered to be saturated.

AIS has set a goal of transitioning into a quad-play multimedia communications company, and entering the fiber broadband market will help the operator achieve its ambitions.
