Telenor India has awarded Alcatel-Lucent a deal to provide managed services for its Telewings unit's mobile operations in three of India's 22 telecom circles.

The deal covers the circles of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, Alcatel-Lucent announced.

The vendor will provide managed and network transformation services. Research unit Bell Labs will also provide Telewings with advice on network and business modeling.

Telewings, which operates the Uninor brand, is looking to pursue a new approach to managed services through the deal, according to COO Yogesh Malik.

“We believe that thinking beyond traditional Managed Services, working together in a transformational partnership set-up will bring continuous innovation and deliver better services to our end-consumers,” Malik said.

For Alcatel-Lucent, the deal follows in the wake of the $1 billion network outsourcing deal it won with Reliance Communications in January.

Alcatel-Lucent will manage RCom's networks in the south and east of India, while Ericsson will manage the networks in the west and north through a similar $1 billion deal.
