Alcatel-Lucent will next month conduct a live demonstration of LTE-based transmission over a private network suitable for defense and security agencies.

The company has teamed up with Crystal System Consulting to conduct the demonstration, which will take place on the opening day of the Course du Rhum ocean race.

The experiment will involve setting up private telecom links on land and sea to form an LTE-based private network.

The demonstration will involve on-board HD video recording for French Navy vessels, the national lifeboat service and the Gendarmerie Maritime, allowing for HD video streaming to commend posts or smartphones.

Alcatel-Lucent said the demonstration will also showcase the benefits of geolocation and position mapping for field units.

“In order to meet the Navy's needs, particularly in the area of maritime protection and safety, the Navy is constantly studying the opportunities offered by new developments in information and communication technology,” said Captain Henri de Foucauld, head of the French navy's ICT systems office.

“This is why the Navy became involved in this promising experiment, since 4G-LTE coverage partly covers coastal operations.”
