Australia might be rapidly rolling out fiber broadband access, but that hasn't stopped the country slipping down the rankings in a global broadband access speed chart.

The country slipped to 40th place in the rankings following a 2.5% decline in average connection speeds year-on-year in third quarter of 2012, regular research by Akamai Technologies found.

Average speeds in Australia during the quarter of 4.3 Mbps are just over 10 Mbps slower than world leader South Korea (14.7 Mbps).
