China Mobile Hong Kong and Ericsson have completed a live demonstration of FDD/TDD LTE-A three carrier aggregation, achieving peak data rates of 272Mbps.

The demonstration involved aggregating one 15MHz carrier of 2.6-GHz FDD spectrum with two TDD carriers in the 2.3-GHz band, consisting of one 20MHz block and another 10MHz carrier.

It was performed on China Mobile Hong Kong's network using Ericsson FDD+TDD carrier aggregation technology and network testers provided by Cobham wireless.

“We have just achieved another milestone for the converged LTE FDD/TD-LTE network and see it as a huge development for the future needs of the services supplied by telecoms to their customers,” China Mobile Hong Kong director and vice president Dr Ma Zibin said.

“We believe this technology will become a milestone in the development of telecoms networks.”

China Mobile Hong Kong launched the first converged TDD/FDD LTE network in 2012.

Rival operator 3 Hong Kong recently revealed plans to launch an FDD/TDD LTE-A network early next year.

“Ericsson demonstrated 450 Mbps download speed achieved by combining three 20 MHz LTE carriers last year,” Ericsson Hong Kong and Macau president Paul Bergström commented. “Today’s demonstration is completed in a different environment -- on a live converged LTE FDD/TDD network.”

The demonstration Bergström was referring to was conducted with Australia's Telstra in May last year. It involved one block of 1800-MHz spectrum and two blocks of 2600-MHz.
