Ericsson has acquired Canadian software firm ConceptWave, in a deal which will further enhance the Sweden telecom vendor’s OSS/BSS portfolio.

The company said it bought all of ConceptWave's shares and closed the acquisition at signing on Tuesday, but without disclosing the financial terms of the deal.

ConceptWave, through the acquisition, will operate as an Ericsson subsidiary and continue to be managed as a separate entity with its own management and will retain its workforce of 170.

Elisabetta Romano, head of OSS in business unit support solutions at Ericsson, said there is a trend towards more personalization of services, where end-users want to purchase communications services meeting their individual needs.

“This puts high demand on telecom operators to be able to offer flexible product bundles with customized pricing packages,” she noted. “In this area ConceptWave's solutions and employees' expertise adds considerable value to Ericsson's portfolio."

ConceptWave, incepted in 2000, is providing software solutions to better support telecoms operators with their handling of activities related to personalizing end-user offerings and revenue management solutions. Its customers are mostly telecoms providers in Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia.

The ConceptWave deal follows Ericsson’s $1.15 billion acquisition of Telcordia in 2011. The Telcordia deal has helped Ericsson expand its OSS/BSS portfolio in several key areas and substantially increase its footprint in North America.

Ericsson said it has already bolstered its position in the OSS/BSS sector in the domain of charging and billing, with its solutions serving 1.7 billion customers.
