SmarTone-Vodafone launches HSPA+
SmarTone-Vodafone has launched HSPA+ in Hong Kong with tiered connectivity plans. CEO Douglas Li also plans to allocate more resources to boost the customer experience for smartphone users, saying the SmarTone-Vodafone’s smartphone users have increased 70% since last year.

CSL opens LTE lab

CSL opens the doors of its LTE lab in Kowloon Bay – the first in Hong Kong and one of the first in the world. The center is at the heart of a cluster of LTE field trials across the city.

9m new HSPA links monthly

The growth rate of HSPA Mobile Broadband connections has increased by nearly two thirds in the last year, according to figures released by Wireless Intelligence. The rise in demand is seen to continue accelerating, with a further 27 million HSPA connections forecast to be added by the end of 2009.

CDG simplifies 3G, 4G roaming between CDMA operators

The CDMA Development Group announced its CDMA Roaming Hub (CRH) will offer an accelerated, multi-lateral, multi-service roaming implementation framework through centralized third-party service providers. This will provide CDMA carriers with an alternative to the current bi-lateral roaming implementation model, enabling the rapid expansion of CDMA roaming to many emerging markets.

Adam Internet taps Alvarion for Wimax project in Australia

Adam Internet chose Alvarion to deploy a Wimax network across metropolitan Adelaide in Australia, where the former is building a network under the government’s Broadband Guarantee Program. The network will deliver high-speed broadband services to subscribers across an approximate 5,000 square-kilometer area.

Greenpacket supplies modems to Eurasia

Green Packet has secured three separate deals with Eurasian Wimax operators Maximali (Georgia), Intellecom (Ukraine) and iCON Communications (Armenia) for the supply of its modems. Senior GM Kelvin Lee said Greenpacket foresees tremendous opportunity for the growth in the region which saw a second-quarter expansion of 6% and a yearly rate of 29%.

Yota operations breaks even

4G service provider Yota reached its operational breakeven point in less than five months following the roll out of its mobile Wimax network in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Yota has set the commercial launch of networks in Sochi and Krasnodar and plans to roll out in 15 more Russian cities in 2010.

Qualcomm leads 4G patent holders

Qualcomm is emerging as the leading patent holder in 4G wireless communications as it recorded 24% of ETSI declarations surrounding long-term evolution networks, according to ABI Research. Qualcomm also accounts for 16% of the 26,000 patents that have potential relevance to 4G technologies, including Wimax.
