KT has announced that its GigaWire technology, designed to wring gigabit-level internet speeds out of existing telephone lines, has been adopted as an international standard.

The ITU recently ratified the standard at an ITU-T meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, Business Koreareported.

The technology promises a top speed three times faster than available using VDSL. KT and other interested operators will be able to use the technology to provide high-speed broadband to older apartments or housing complexes without having to replace copper wires with fiber.

According to the report, adoption of GigaWire as a standard will pave the way for the export of the technology for nations including Japan, the UK, France and the US, which are all involved in projects to improve wired networks.

Development of the technology fits squarely in with KT's current focus on building what it calls a Gigatopia vision.

As part of the project, KT launched a blazing 1.17Gbps LTE service last month. KT developed the GiGa LTE technology in collaboration with Samsung.
