South Korea's LG U+ has arranged to use the Syniverse IPX Network to provide VoLTE services to subscribers roaming in Hong Kong.

Customers visiting Hong Kong will be able to use the SmarTone network to take advantage of HD voice calls in the market.

The launch of the VoLTE roaming service is the start of a bilateral service partnership between the two operators.

LG U+ launched VoLTE roaming in Japan in April via a bilateral partnership with KDDI. It marked the commercial of an international VoLTE roaming service.

“The global reach of Syniverse’s IPX network to nearly every operator that has launched LTE allows us to continue to expand VoLTE coverage and services in additional markets to achieve the critical reach and coverage our subscribers demand from their constantly connected devices,” LG U+ senior manager for global roaming Lee KunHee commented.

The Syniverse IPX network currently reaches around 270 operators in 44 countries through some 2,000 LTE roaming routes. It supports VoLTE roaming through either S8 home routing or local breakout technology.

SmarTone general manager of roaming Ben Yeung said the company is “excited to become the first operator in Hong Kong to provide VoLTE service to inbound roaming customers.”
