Thai telecom regulator NBTC is seeking help from the ITU to set a standard for cross-border frequency coordination between the nation and adjacent countries to address signal interference.

The NBTC is holding a three-day cross border frequency coordination workshop to help draw up a solution to the problem, the Bangkok Postsaid.

On the borders of Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Malaysia, spectrum interference is a persistent and serious problem. The nations are seeking a single solution to manage cross-border frequencies.

Besides service disruption, signal interference can cause issues with customers being charged international roaming rates while still in their home countries.

Thai operator Dtac has already been asked to reduce the power of radio signals in certain areas along the Thai-Laotian border because the signals were causing major interference in Laos.

The NBTC had committed to addressing cross-border frequency coordination as part of its 2012-2016 master plan.
