Nokia announces more R&D cuts

Nokia has announced a second round of R&D cuts in a week, this time removing 220 staff in Japan.

 

The announcement comesdays after the company said it planned to cut 330 R&D positions in Denmark and Finland. After both rounds of cuts, Nokia's R&D workforce will have been reduced by around 3%.

 

Nokia will continue to source a significant amount of its manufacturing work to Japan, the company said. The cuts would not affect its Vertu line of luxury phones or the Japanese operations of infrastructure JV Nokia Siemens.

 

The handset vendor plans to narrow its range of handsets to a smaller line of more feature-rich phones, and is reducing its R&D workforce accordingly.

 

The company has announced total headcount reductions of around 4,200 this year.
