NEC Corporation and PT NEC Indonesia have signed a contract to construct the Papua Cable System for Indonesia's PT Telkom.

The Papua Cable System will be a high-bandwidth optical submarine cable system that will connect Indonesia's Papua Provinces on the island of New Guinea.

Spanning 2,000km, the system will be the first fiber subsea cable system to connect the Papua provinces of Indonesia.

It is designed to carry transmission speeds of 40Gbps and 100Gbps, and to complement PT Telkom's existing fiber networks in Indonesia.

It is slated for completion by the end of 2014.
