Indonesia's Smartfren has commercially launched LTE-A services across the nation, and has set ambitious rollout and adoption targets.

The operator has officially launched LTE-A over the 850-MHz and 2300-MHz frequency bands, the Jakarta Postreported. Smartfren's 4G coverage now spans from Aceh to Kalimantan.

In the east of the nation Smartfren has around 3,500 base stations, and the company aims to roll out around 4,500 in the west.

Smartfren will make its 4G services available over its own-brand Smartfren Andromax smartphone, as well as through more mainstream 4G handsets via bundling packages.

The company aims to ship around 1 million 4G Andromax devices this year alone, and hopes to migrate around 30% of its customers to 4G.

With the launch Smartfren has joined rivals Telkomsel, XL Axiata and Indosat in offering dual-band 4G services. But the latter operators use 1800-MHz and 900-MHz spectrum, and Smartfren asserts that its configuration will allow it to offer faster speeds than the competition.
