Telenor Myanmar has completed the market's first successful trial of NB-IoT technology over its LTE network, in collaboration with Ericsson.

The trial was conducted in the city of Mandalay, and involved the successful testing of IoT use cases such as connected transport vehicles and the deployment of ambient sensors at business offices.

Telenor Myanmar plans to deploy an NB-IoT network to help develop Myanmar's IoT ecosystem, and pursue opportunities for solutions in smart city, logistics and other applications.

“This trial has demonstrated the technological advancement of Telenor Myanmar network and its readiness for embracing future technologies like 5G,” the operator's CTO Jai Prakash said.
“In NB-IoT domain, possibilities are immense and innovative solutions and applications can be provided on IoT platforms like smart homes, smart cities, smart metering, connected cars and clinical remote monitoring, to name a few.”

Ericsson's latest Mobility Report, published in November, predicts that global cellular IoT connections will grow at a CAGR of 27% through to 2024, reaching 4.1 billion. The report also identified an emerging trend towards offering both NB-IoT and LTE Cat-M1 technologies on the same IoT network.

In April, Telenor and Ericsson announced a successful trial of 1Gbps peak speeds in Myanmar as part of LTE-A trials.
