The ranking of the top Asian wholesale providers has remained remarkably stable in Q1.
The only changes were in the 9-11th positions, with Tata India making some headway at the expense of IIJ.
The grouping around 6th place has tightened, perhaps setting the stage for some changes in Q3. Likewise the cluster around 9th spot is tight and open to future changes.
Should the Telekom Indonesia acquisition of Pacnet continue, it would move the combined entity to within striking distance of PCCW but not above them.
Although remaining third, KDDI gained from strong growth in Japan and now has 57% of the traffic of the leader compared to 50% in Q1.
Softbank experienced good organic growth in Japan as it added newly routed networks to its backbone. While still #7, it gained 6 points during the period to have 31% of the traffic of NTT. On the downside, Pacnet Global shed 5 points and now accounts for a quarter of the leader's business.
This quarterly ranking has been created for Telecom Asia by Renesys Corp and is based network service providers with both a footprint in Asia and a large customer base in Asia. The idea is to target the players serving the needs of Asia-to-Asia business and excludes wholesale providers such as Level 3 which don't have a presence in Asia.
Renesys has been monitoring IP traffic for 10 years and looks 350,000 routes. The ranking is based on downstream traffic at the edge, middle and core of the network.
