Vietnam's fourth-ranked mobile operator Vietnamobile has revealed plans to expand its 3G coverage nationwide.

The company is in the process of extending its coverage to all 63 of Vietnam's cities and provinces, up from the current 12, Viet Nam News (VNS) reported.

Vietnamobile has faced difficulty competing with Vietnam's top three operators due to a spectrum shortfall arising from the decision by joint 3G licensee EVN Telecoms to merge with Viettel.

But VNS quotes CEO Elizabete Fong as stating that the company believes there are still plenty of opportunities in the Vietnamese market for a fourth-ranked challenger, even though mobile penetration has reached around 140%.

The operator's strategy is to focus on providing strong coverage and targeting young consumers in Vietnam's three major cities.

Vietnamobile also just launched a new offering named Pizza SIM, designed to allow customers to tailor call, text and data allocations as well as entertainment packages to suit their individual needs.

By the end of 2015, Vietnam's 3G market had reached 40 subscribers per 100 inhabitants, according to statistics from the Ministry of Information and Communications.
