Webwire: BSNL targeted by cable thieves; Elliott buys C&WW stake

Indian state-owned operator BSNL seems to be the target of a co-ordinated racket - involving some staff members - to steal fiber cables in areas undergoing maintenance and roadworks. 
Hedge fund Elliott Management has reportedly started acquiring a stake in Cable & Wireless Worldwide, which may affect the brewing bidding war for the operator between Vodafone and Tata Communications.
Research firm Berg Insight expects 100 million NFC-enabled smartphones will be sold this year, up from 30 million in 2011. Sales are also forecast to reach 700 million by 2016.
