Indonesia's XL Axiata has contracted Ericsson to help roll out LTE and upgrade the operator's existing 2G and 3G networks in Jakarta and Central Java.
The deal covers all hardware, software and services required to deliver LTE services to XL subscribers in the areas.
The companies said three-year, turnkey network deployment is designed to improve network capacity and enhance speeds in Jakarta and Central Java, while equipping XL to cope with the Indonesian market's rapidly-growing mobile data traffic.
It is in line with XL's goal of attracting between 8 million and 10 million LTE subscribers by the end of next year. The operator is expanding its 1800-MHz network to help achieve this target, and plans to commence the expansion from November after a spectrum refarming is complete.
“We are keen to work with Ericsson to bring this next generation technology to Indonesia,” XL Axiata president director Dian Siswarini said.
“We are looking forward to the implementation of the 4G/LTE network and the improved mobile broadband experience this will deliver for our subscribers.”
XL Axiata is one of Indonesia's main mobile providers. The operaor is 66.5% owned by Malaysia's Axiata Group, and the remaining 33.5% is owned by the public.
