Australian players molested in Indore; CA and BCCI condemn ‘shameful act’

The Women’s World Cup was overshadowed by a disturbing incident in Indore, where two members of the Australian women’s team were molested by a motorcyclist while walking to a café. The accused has since been arrested, prompting strong condemnation from Cricket Australia (CA) and the BCCI.

Cricket Australia Confirms Incident

Cricket Australia confirmed the incident on Saturday, saying the players were “approached and touched inappropriately” while walking to a café near their hotel.

Despite the distressing incident, Australia went on to defeat South Africa by seven wickets later that day, with Alana King starring with a stunning 7-18.

Swift Police Action

Police said the incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Thursday on Khajrana Road, about half a kilometre from the team hotel. Acting on CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts, officers arrested the suspect, Aqeel Khan, who allegedly followed the players on his motorcycle, touched one of them inappropriately, and sped away.

The suspect’s motorcycle matched the eyewitness description and number plate. Khan has prior criminal cases against him.

The case has been registered under Section 74 (use of criminal force to outrage a woman’s modesty) and Section 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Condemnation From Officials

Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya called the incident “a stain on India’s image,” urging strict punishment.

He reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women.

BCCI Expresses Regret

BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia issued an official statement condemning the assault.

This is a deeply regrettable and isolated incident. India has always been known for its warmth and hospitality. We appreciate the swift action by Madhya Pradesh Police in apprehending the accused.

He added that the BCCI would review and strengthen safety protocols for all international teams touring India.

Australia Remain Focused Amid Turmoil

The Australian camp has refrained from naming the affected players, respecting their privacy, but officials confirmed that both are safe and being supported by team management. The squad has continued with tournament commitments while local authorities ensure enhanced security arrangements.
