The five-time Ballon d’Or winner opened up about how close he came to becoming a Gunner, and even expressed his admiration for the North London club.

Ronaldo said.
“It’s true story. I was close to joining Arsenal many years ago… but it’s the past. Honestly, when I look at Arsenal, I never see them as a rival. I like the team — I really do.”

For years, stories have circulated about how Arsène Wenger tried to bring a teenage Ronaldo to North London from Sporting Lisbon. The Frenchman himself has admitted that Arsenal had serious talks with the young winger and even invited him to their training ground at London Colney. But before Wenger could make the move official, Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United stepped in. In 2003, United signed Ronaldo for £12.24 million — a deal that would go on to change football history.

Ronaldo went on to become one of the most celebrated players in the world, winning three Premier League titles, a Champions League, and his first Ballon d’Or at Old Trafford before joining Real Madrid.
