3G as birth control

It seems 3G networks can do more than just deliver compelling data services. The technology can also be used as a means of birth control, according to Indian carrier Idea.

The operator is giving the technology its stiffest test to date in its advertising, suggesting that people with the latest smartphones will simply be too busy to make babies, which in turn will help to control the country's massive population.

But, as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's news site Technology Review points out, the joke could backfire if the services further empower women in the country - a move it claims is a sure-fire way to cut birth rates.
