AIS has launched 50,000 free Wi-Fi access points as part of Thailand’s ICT Ministry’s Smart Thailand free public Wi-Fi pledge.

AIS CEO Vichien Mektrakarn said that the project would reduce inequality in access to information and uplift quality of life.

ICT Minister Anudith Nakorntap said that Dtac, True and CAT will soon be brought on-board and the number of free access points will reach 100,000 access points by the end of the year and 400,000 by 2015.

Free users will be limited to 10 hours of access a month, split 5 hours each between AIS’ own Wi-Fi network and that of partner fixed-line provider 3BB. Vichien said that speeds would be up to 100 Mbps.
