Apple plans to more than double the number of Apple Stores across the greater China region to help better address demand.

The company plans to increase the number of stores it operates in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan to 40, up from 15 today, Bloombergreported citing CEO Tim Cook.

Apple expects China to become the vendor's largest market by sales in the future, so the company considers the market to be very important, Cook said. Greater China already accounted for around 14% of Apple's revenue in the September quarter, or around $5.8 billion.

The company opened its first China store in Beijing in 2008, and now also has stores in Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuxi, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Apple launched the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in China last week, a month after its launch across first-release markets including the US and Hong Kong.

Cook also used the Chinese visit to meet with assembly line workers at manufacturing partner Foxconn's facilities, and plans to meet with Alibaba founder Jack Ma on Monday.
