Apple has sent out invites to a January 27 press event at which it is widely expected to unveil its first tablet device.

Its invitation to the San Francisco event contained no detail. “`Come see our latest creation,’” the message said, below splotches of bright-colored paint surrounding a white Apple logo, WSJreported.

A Journal story earlier this month said that Apple was preparing to unveil a multimedia tablet later set off speculation about the device.

Reportedly, the tablet will have a 10-inch to 11-inch touch screen and be ready to ship in March.

The device has been the biggest focus for Apple chief Steve Jobs since he returned to work in June after several months absence due to a liver transplant.

With the tablet, Apple is entering a market in which many have tried and failed, but which has seen a resurgence since Amazon began selling its Kindle e-reader two years ago.

Analysts say the Apple tablet could cost as much as $1,000, the Journal said.
