The global average internet connection speed grew 5% sequentially in the fourth quarter to 2.9 Mbs, and Hong Kong again topped the list of countries with the fastest average peak speeds in the world.
According to Akamai's quarterly State of the Internet report, average connection speeds increased in 98 countries worldwide during the quarter.
South Korea had the highest average speeds in APAC at 14 Mbps, followed by Japan at 10.8 Mbps and Hong Kong at 9.3 Mbps.
The lowest average speed was in India, at 1.2 Mbps. China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines all also had average speeds below 2 Mbps.
Globally, average peak connection speeds grew 4.6% to 16.6 Mbps. Hong Kong's peak connection speed grew 6.2% quarter-on-quarter to 57.5 Mbps. No other APAC nation exceeded a 50 Mbps average peak, with South Korea coming closest at 49.3 Mbps.
Akamai estimates that global broadband adoption increased to 42% during the quarter, up 2.7% from the prior quarter, while high broadband (speeds over 10 Mbps) adoption remained at 11%. Around 75% of countries saw a quarterly increase in unique IP address counts.
The average mobile connection speed ranged from 8 Mbps to 345 kbps. Data contributed by Ericsson for the report suggests that mobile data traffic doubled from the fourth quarter of 2011 to the fourth quarter of 2012.
