Bharti, Reliance, Vodafone join 3G race

India’s biggest cellcos are lining up to bid for 3G licenses.

The two largest operators, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications, along with Vodafone Essar, threw their hats into the ring yeseterrday, reports said.

Idea Cellular is also expected to submit its application for 3G spectrum by the deadline at the end of today.

Bharti and Reliance are seeking spectrum in each of India’s 22 telecom zones, the WSJreported.

Telenor-backed Uninor could also bid for 2100Mhz in metropolitan circles and other lucrative regions, said the WSJ.

Tata Communications is believed to be chasing 2.5GHz spectrum - the target of Qualcomm’s surprise bid announced earlier this week
