China Mobile, Huawei test TDD+ technology UDC

China Mobile, Huawei and Qualcomm have completed commercial verification of the new TDD+ technology uplink data compression (UDC) over a live TD-LTE network.

UDC is designed to improve uplink efficiency by using the LTE modem to intelligently compress uplink data at LTE lower layers based on conditions and application traffic.

The companies said testing shows that UDC can improve overall uplink system capacity by 50%.

The technology can potentially be used to help operators maximize TD-LTE uplink resources, greatly increase the number of simultaneous uplink users and improve compression efficiency for applications and services including WeChat and web browsing.

In addition, latency can be significantly reduced for web browsing in areas with poor mobile mobile performance, such as on the edge of the coverage area.

The TDD+ 4.5G standard will incorporate technologies including Massive MIMO, 3D Beamforming and UDC. It promises to offer Gigabit-level mobile broadband speeds.

China Mobile and Huawei separately revealed they have collaborated to roll out VoLTE HD voice services in Zhejiang, marking the operator's commercial debut of the service.

Subsidiary Zhejiang Mobile has been working for more than a year to ensure it can take the leading role in China Mobile's VoLTE commercialization. The company made the first VoLTE call and VoLTE video call in China in 2013.

Huawei along with ZTE were the big winners in China Mobile's recent nationwide VoLTE procurement tender. Huawei was selected to deploy the technology in developed coastal provinces, as well as metropolitan cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen.
