China Unicom will initiate a large-scale open beta test of a cloud computing service on May 27, and aims to grab one million users.

The service, branded as Wo Cloud, has been independently developed by China Unicom for consumer, corporate, and government use.

At present Wo-Cloud has achieved information and file synchronization across multiple devices (ie. cloud synchronization) and the centralization of file and data storage as well as data security (i.e. cloud backup), according to Marbridge Counsulting.

Wo-Cloud version 1.0 officially went online on January 31 of this year, with the launch of Wo-Cloud version 2.0 coming shortly, said Zhang Yunyong, director of cloud computing at China Unicom’s research institute.

While version 1.0 features the backup and synchronization of one user account on different terminals, version 2.0 will allow sharing across different user accounts, a feature that is very suitable for small and medium enterprises, Zhang added.
