Sri Lankan carrier Dialog Telekom has launched commercial 3G services in the country, after securing a license from Sri Lanka's Telecommunications regulatory Commission.
The Telekom Malaysia unit said it will provide coverage in Colombo initially, with expansion planned for the following months.
The carrier said it intends to make 3G and multimedia services "available and affordable" to all Sri Lankans.
The firm said it started trials on 3G since 2004, involving more than 1,000 customers and covering much of Colombo city.
In addition, the provider, which has over 2.5 million customers and holds almost 62% of the market according to Mobile World subscriber database records, confirmed it will also support HSDPA in the future.
