Data center provider Equinix has launched its carrier Ethernet exchange following a six-month trial.

Equinix said it is currently rolling out the exchange to Los Angeles, New York, Silicon Valley, Chicago and London, with launches in 14 other metro areas planned throughout the next year.

The exchange has been in trials since October, with the participation of 24 operators including PCCW Global, KPN International, Reliance, EasyNet, Level 3 and Virgin Media Business.

Neutral Tandem in March launched a rival carrier Ethernet exchange, while CENX launched its own platform in November.
