Ericsson claims to be the world’s largest provider of IPTV after acquiring Microsoft’s Mediaroom platform.

The acquisition adds 13 million households to Ericsson’s IPTV service, and boosts its overall market share to 25%. The vendor claims Mediaroom is the most deployed IPTV platform in the world, noting it is used by nearly 60 operators globally.

Per Borgklint, senior vice president and head of business Unit Support Solutions at Ericsson, says the purchase places the firm “securely at the heart” of a market where subscriber numbers are “predicted to grow by more than 18% each year,” and revenues will hit “$45 billion by 2015.”

The acquisition also adds experience to Ericsson’s IPTV team, with Mediaroom’s 400 staff due to be integrated with Borgklint’s unit under the name Ericsson Mediaroom.
