Ericsson is collaborating with Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to help the nation lay the groundwork for 5G development and adoption.

The vendor has exchanged views on 5G technology development with the ITRI, the Taipei Timesreported, giving the state research institute an inside track to the work being conducted by the EU-funded Mobile and wireless communications Enablers for the 2020 Information Society (METIS).

The collaboration is aimed at helping Taiwan catch up in terms of the development of next-generation mobile technologies, the report states citing Ericsson Taiwan president Philip Tseng

Taiwan has been lagging behind on the 4G front since the nation backed Wimax over LTE in the 4G standards race. As a result, Taiwanese operators' LTE rollouts are just now getting started.

Ericsson's Tsing said Taiwanese device manufacturers have the best chance to seize the business opportunities offered by next-generation internet-enabled mobile devices.

Standards work for 5G is picking up steam. At Mobile World Congress, the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance announced it has commenced work on defining the key operator requirements for 5G. There are also academic or government-led 5G research projects underway in South Korea, the UK and the US.
