Alcatel-Lucent has initiated the sale of its stake in defence technology unit Thales. The company will sell the 20% stake to French company Dassault Group for $1.9 billion.

Guangdong Mobile, China Mobile's subsidiary in Guangdong province, has selected Amdocs' commercial-off-the-shelf operational support system to manage its complex network inventory requirements. Amdocs says the deal is the company's first OSS win in China.

Point-Topic has determined that there are now more than 400 million broadband subscribers. Fibre-based subscribers have grown to around 45 million.

CDMA subscriptions have reached 475 million worldwide, according to the CDMA Development Group's own research. Most of this growth is coming from emerging markets.

NTT DoCoMo and KTF are to team up to develop a smartphone using Google's Android suite, according to the Nikkei business daily. The phone will be 20% cheaper than existing smartphones because of the costs it can save on software development, the report states.
