FASTTAKES: SubicTel, Huawei, AOL

PLDT unit SubicTel plans to invest 212 million pesos ($4.5 million) in a project that would make Subic Bay Freeport Zone a fiber optic gateway for IT firms. The project would make the freeport zone part of PLDT's domestic fiber optic network, the country's most extensive fiber optic network, the firm said.

Huawei signs a deal to form a joint venture with UK-based marine engineering company Global Marine Systems. The two companies have signed an MOU for the joint venture with the aim to become the leader in providing submarine solutions and services globally, Huawei said.

AOL says it will introduce a new version of its popular email service this summer that will include its AIM instant messaging platform, among other features, reports said. AOL is testing the new version of its email service and expects to launch it widely on its Internet portal page around the end of July, the reports further said.
