Fujitsu and Nokia Siemens Networks will jointly develop core LTE architecture for Japan's NTT DOCOMO.

The two companies announced an agreement to develop the Service Architecture Evolution (SAE) Gateway, including the Serving Gateway and the PDN Gateway, for NTT's Super 3G project.

This puts NTT DOCOMO to becoming the first operator to introduce LTE-based services.

LTE is the next-generation system for mobile networks that enables faster and smoother delivery of new multimedia and rich call applications.

In LTE, core network functions are performed by the Evolved Packet Core (EPC), which implements voice service in the packet switched domain, fulfilling the goal of networks based on all-IP with access not only from 3G or LTE, but ultimately also WiFi, Wimax, or even wired access technologies.
