The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is deploying a wireless network using 802.11n equipment from Cisco.

The network is intended to provide access to student hostels, according to Cisco, and also run e-learning applications.

The said network is expected to cater to more than 4,000 students and enabled high-bandwidth multimedia applications including video-on-demand and multimedia virtual classrooms.

Cisco said its 802.11n solution, underpinned by a 10 Gigabit Ethernet backbone, will provide data speeds up to 300 Mbps.

Public access will begin by September, according to Cisco, adding the school has plans to expand the network further using wireless mesh network solutions.
