HK's CITIC Telecom plans cloud backup service

CITIC Telecom CPC is gearing up to launch a virtual to cloud offsite backup and replication service to companies in Hong Kong.

This will be done through CITIC's new partnership with Veeam Software, which provides business continuity solutions for virtualized server infrastructure.

CITIC Telecom CPC has deployed Veeam’s Cloud Connect, integrating it to the company’s own SmartCLOUD platform to be able to provide an expanded SmartCloud BRR (backup, replication and recovery) service to locally-based enterprises running an increasingly always-on virtualized environment.

“We first partnered with Veeam in 2012 for our cloud-to-cloud backup and replication solution,” said Daniel Kwong, company senior vice president for information technology and security services. “Previously, companies must be on our SmartCLOUD platform first before they can enjoy our BRR service. By deploying Veeam’s Cloud Connect, we are able to reach new customers with SmartCLOUD’s new virtual-to-cloud capability.”

Kwong told Computerworld Hong Kong some companies are already piloting his company’s virtual-to-cloud BRR service and that general release is expected next month.

CITIC Telecom CPC is the first service provider in Asia Pacific to deploy Veeam’s Cloud Connect.

“We tried to use traditional backup solution but it doesn’t work. We’ve been using Veeam Software to power our BRR service for four years. It was easy to set up; backup time is 80 times faster from 20 hours to 15 minutes; and there are frequent feature enhancements.”

Peak Reinsurance Company is one of CITIC Telecom CPC’s enterprise customers, which have reaped the benefits of using the service provider’s SmartCloud BRR services.

The FSI company wanted to resolve the challenge of long back up time for the enormous amount of daily business data that are being generated.

“We have been using SmartCloud BRR service since 2013, and I am particularly impressed by its fast backup speed,” said Pedro Ng, director of information technology at Peak Reinsurance Company. “Compared with legacy backup solutions, it greatly shortens the backup time. Email reports ensure each backup job is completed successfully. As FSI company, we demand for stringent back up service.”
