HP will double its renewable energy power use by 2012, the company has announced.

The IT giant says it will increase its global purchases of renewable power from less than 4% in 2008 to 8% by 2012. It boosted renewable energy purchases by more than 350% in 2007.

HP has already committed to reducing worldwide energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions to 16% below 2005 levels by 2010.

The company recently completed a 1.1 MW solar installation in San Diego, with 6,256 solar panels. It is expected to save the company $750,000 over the next 15 years while providing more than 10% of the facility's power.
