Katamari goes mobile "&brkbar; again

Porting popular console games to mobile is risky business, not least because it has to meet the expectations of fans of the original. The new mobile version of cult fave Katamari Damacy shouldn't have any problems on that score.

Namco Networks has released Rolling with Katamari, a 3D mobile game that keeps the simple premise of the Katamari series - roll up big balls of objects - but adds original levels made exclusively for the mobile version.

The game offers more than 30 levels and five different game modes, and also comes with seasonally themed content packs for download.

This version of the 3D game is similar to the Katamari Damacy Mobile game released in Japan for NTT DoCoMo's 904i series handsets last year. That version, however, featured a tilt control specific to the 904i that allowed players to control the rolling ball by tilting the screen.

This version relies on standard mobile phone controls to play, but considering the console version uses dual analog joysticks, the translation to mobile works rather well.

If console fans will be disappointed by anything, it may be the stripped down music - a typical weakness of mobile games of any stripe, but perhaps more so for Rolling with Katamari, since the quirky music is (for my money) part of the game's charm.
