Level 3 Communications has announced plans to expand its Ethernet network in the US.

The operator will increase the number of Ethernet switches on its network by nearly 400%, and make additional improvements that will extend its carrier Ethernet services portfolio.

With the new switches Level 3 plans to eliminate the need for backhaul of switched metro Ethernet applications, and improve the efficiency of backhaul transit for high-layer services such as internet or voice.

Level 3 provides Ethernet services in 22 countries.
