Limiting access

Malaysian cellco Maxis wants to run triple-play services on TM's FTTH/B HSBB network this quarter, but July has come and gone with no deal.

Pay-TV operator Astro - a sister company of Maxis - has all the major content rights stitched up, so Maxis is sweet for IPTV content while TM's paltry HyppTV IPTV offering provides just 24 channels.

One can't help but wonder if government-backed HSBB's "come one, come all" policy is really the open access regime it's cracked up to be given TM's reluctance to provide reasonable pricing to other service providers.

However, Maxis sources indicate that the firm is likely to make a significant announcement on its HSBB plans in 1Q11.
