Gameloft, a mobile games developer listed on the Paris stock exchange, is seeking a boost in distribution by embedding its games directly into silicon from Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek.

A partnership deal between the pair will see Gameloft back a range of gaming applications on MediaTek’s feature- and smartphone semiconductors, and provide dedicated R&D resources to developing games specifically for the chip firm’s silicon.

MediaTek president, Ching-Jiang Hsieh, claims the tie-up is a “major breakthrough for the industry” that will “bring even more value to mobile phones.” He notes mobile gaming has become “one of the leading value-added service and application in the mobile internet industry,” and predicts the collaboration will boost the competitive edge of his firm’s handset customers.

For Gameloft, the deal opens the door to around a billion Chinese mobile phone customers, senior vice president Gonzague de Vallois states.
