Application downloads are expected to reach 5 billion by 2014, more than double the estimated 2.3 billion downloads in 2009, according to ABI Research.
Mainly driving this surge is the growing adoption of smartphones which saw sales rise 20% in 2009, as well as the proliferation of application stores.
Wireless research associate Bhavya Khanna said the big beneficiary will be Android, which will see its market share of total application downloads increase from 11% of the market in 2009 to 23% in 2014.
