Mozilla will make an alpha release of its new mobile Firefox browser available next week.

Codenamed Fennec, the browser uses the Gecko rendering engine that powers Firefox but has been optimized for mobile browsing.

According to PC World, Fennec will initially only be available for the Nokia N810 internet tablet, although a Windows Mobile version is under development and will be released in the next few months.

The alpha version has been specifically aimed at the Mozilla community, but a beta version suitable for use by the wider community is expected for 2009.

Fennec will feature the intuitive URL bar that has been integrated into Firefox version 3. As the bar has been designed to require as little typing as possible, it would seem to be a good fit for a mobile browser.
