Mobility transition ramping up

Technology and service providers must innovate for mobility as consumer adoption of mobile technologies moves into the mainstream, Gartner analysts say.

Nick Ingelbrecht, research director at the firm, says what was once considered early adopter usage of mobility is now becoming mainstream behavior. He bases his view on a survey of 8,000 consumers in the US, UK, Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC countries), that shows a faster than expected shift in adoption and spending on consumer technology products.

If technology and service providers fail to act on the change, “[T]hey face a potential train wreck as consumers abandon gadgets, services and applications that do not fully support changing mobile lifestyles,” Ingelbrecht warns.

Gartner’s research also suggests that consumers are spending more on mobile phones, TVs, and home networking equipment than they were two years ago. Average spend on those devices is rising, compared to falls for products including tablet, laptop and desktop PCs, and games consoles.

The firm predicts consumers will increasingly put off upgrading or replacing legacy products including desktop PCs and consoles as the number of portable devices in households rises.

Amanda Sabia, principal research analyst, says increasing replacement cycles “reflects a mixture of economic pressures,” and maturing hardware.

“Increasingly, upgrades are taking place in software, content and application ecosystems supported by cloud services, relieving the requirement for hardware upgrades,” she notes.
