Motorola has sold its cable modem business unit to Taiwan's Compal Broadband Networks for an undisclosed amount.

The Euro Docsis CPE business which covers Europe, Middle East and Africa, includes access to Moto's standalone Docsis modems as well as its voice-optimized embedded multimedia terminal adapters (EMTAs), and WiFi-enabled broadband gateways. Motorola is currently the world's largest supplier of Docsis devices.

Cable Digital News reports that Compal, a Motorola partner for about two years, will be the central point for all sales and support for Moto Docsis CPEs in the EMEA region. Motorola “will continue to receive the original quality of Motorola with the manufacturing economics of scale afforded by Compal.”

It is understood that the equipment will continue to carry the Moto branding. Motorola will also continue to develop, sell and support Docsis 2.0 and 3.0 CPE directly to its service provider customers in Asia Pacific and the Americas.

The news of the sale arrived as speculation was building that Motorola is in the process of shedding its Home & Networks Mobility division, which includes its Docsis equipment unit, for around $4.5 billion (€3 billion). Huawei has been mooted as a possible buyer.

Moto shipped 2.68 million Docsis devices in the first quarter of last year, representing a market share of 38.4% and beating Cisco with 18.9% share.
