Malaysia's Internet Exchange (MyIX) has increased the capacity of its central node from 40Gbps to 100Gbps to help meet the country's projected capacity needs for the next two to three years.

MyIX, operated by an initiative under telecoms regulator the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, conducted the upgrade to coincide with its 10th anniversary.

With the upgrade, MyIX will also be able to provide members with more 10G ports, the exchange said.

Total peering traffic over MyIX nodes grew to a record 170.474Gbps in August, a year-on-year increase of 57%. Peak points for each month of the year have exceeded the 10Gbps threshold.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, MyIX held its first Internet Peering Forum, aimed at facilitating greater co-operation among key ISP, telco and internet players towards improving Malaysia's internet ecosystem and helping the nation take a leading role in the ASEAN region.

Industry participants agreed that that the needs of the nation must be prioritised along with with commercial interests.

“If Malaysia is to truly achieve a world-class Internet ecosystem and internet peering hub, MyIX members must increase their cooperative spirit and work together in facilitating an overall more efficient internet traffic exchange,” MyIX chair Chiew Kok Hin said.

“This was recommended by the panel during discussions and it was heartening to see our members responding positively to the panel’s suggestion.”
