NBN Co has appointed former BT executive Ralph Steffens as its chief operating officer.

Steffens will oversee NBN Co’s network construction, planning, operations and IT, and will start work at the end of this month.

He will be based in Sydney and reports to CEO Mike Quigley, NBN Co said in a statement.

Prior to joining NBN Co, Steffens was most recently the MD of BT’s service delivery division, where he led a team of 4000 people across the globe responsible for the company's multinational corporate customers as well as its international network and infrastructure.

He also presided over two major network rollouts across Europe and oversaw the upgrade of Britain's broadband infrastructure.
