Jurors in the US are told to stay away from newspapers, televisions and dictionaries. But in one recent case in Florida 9 of 12 jurors in a federal drug case had been found to be spending down time researching the case on the Internet on their BlackBerries and iPhones.

A mistrial was declared after eight weeks of testimony.

Sci-Tech also reports that in another case, a witness in a federal trial repeatedly texted another witness, a law enforcement officer, to ask what he should say on the stand.

The problem has become so prevalent that Superior Court Judge Jan Kearney has called on other members of the bench to help solve the problem.
