Ooredoo has appointed a new CEO for its Myanmar business, experienced emerging market telecom executive Rene Meza.

Meza will replace Ross Cormack, who is leaving the company later this year after becoming the founding CEO of Ooredoo Myanmar when the company was established two years ago.

Meza has over 17 years of experience in emerging markets, having held leadership positions in telecom companies in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

"Rene Meza has considerable experience in leading the growth of telecoms businesses in emerging markets and we believe he has all the qualities to take Ooredoo Myanmar to the next level as we continue to roll-out Myanmar's first 3G-only mobile network,” commented Ooredoo group CEO Dr Nasser Marafih.

Rival Telenor has meanwhile revealed in a presentation that it now has 6.4 million mobile customers in Myanmar, well ahead of Ooredoo's estimated 3.3 million subscribers.

Telenor's network now covers over 50% of the Myanmar population, and the company aims to expand this to 90% within five years from commencing operation.

Both Telenor and Ooredoo secured telecom licenses in Myanmar during a tender process in 2013. Ooredoo launched 3G services in the market in August last year, while Telenor commenced operation the following month.
